While the origin of the celebratory ‘low five’ in hip culture (known as ‘giving skin’ or slapping skin’) is documented back to the 1920’s, there are many theories as to how the ‘high five’ began in the sports world, including a story it first started appearing in women’s volleyball in the 1960’s. However, it’s generally accepted that it all began more than 40 years ago at Dodger Stadium. That story is told in the ESPN 30 for 30 short video documentary, The High Five.
